400 young people from Balti municipality are better prepared to face emergencies

On the occasion of International Day for Disaster Reduction, about 400 students from 10 vocational and technical schools from Balti municipality participated on October 12, 2015 in simulation exercises of actions undertaken in emergencies.

The event was organized by the Emergency Situations Division of Balti municipality, Fire and Rescue Department and Non-Governmental Organization `Mostenitorii”, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UNDP support was provided through the Disaster and Climate Risk Reduction in Moldova Project.

The 400 students participated together with the firefighters and rescuers in rescue simulations in case of a fire, rescue/extrication in case of road accident and other frequent emergency situations.

“All these activities are very important for students. A teacher can only provide theoretical information, but students need to see: these exercises a closer to the reality, to life”, says Ghenadie Gutu, teacher, Technical Railway College.

Ana Bogaciuc, student at the College of Textile Industry, mentioned: “It was very interesting. It is great that in Balti you can attend such events, with so much different equipment, like in movies.”

The students formed 10 groups and participated in a contest dedicated to civil protection. In the meantime, the teachers and management of the 10 educational institutions involved in the activities have come up with a civil protection and disaster prevention training and engagement plan.

Similar exercises will take place in Ungheni on the 14th of October. The awards ceremony for the drawing contest dedicated to disaster prevention takes place on October 13 at the Security School of the Civil Protection and Emergency Situations Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

These events are organized in the context of the International Day for Disaster Reduction, declared on December 21, 2009 by the General Assembly of the United Nations as the day of October 13 of each year. This is a contribution to global culture on natural disasters’ consequences reduction. The aim of the 2015 International Day for Disaster Reduction is to enhance abilities and promote knowledge for individual protection and protection of people around.
