On 24 October 1945, after the end of the Second World War, the United Nations was founded to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and promote social progress, better living standards and human rights.

Seventy years later, the UN has 193 Member States and Moldova celebrates the 23rd anniversary of its UN membership.

To mark this anniversary, the United Nations agencies are organizing a number of events and activities in Chisinau and other cities and villages of Moldova.

Monday 19: UN lesson in schools

United Nations national and international staff will join several schools all across Moldova to hold a lesson about the United Nations, and the concrete work that UN agencies are carrying out in Moldova. Many national staff are coming back to their own old schools to talk about what it means to work for the United nations. International staff, including the UN Resident Representative Dafina Gercheva, will share their experience as a UN staff member working for an international organisation far from home.

Tuesday 20: UN Open House

The UN offices will open their doors for the first UN Open House in Moldova. This initiative was promoted via Facebook and got sold out over a few days. As a result, 100 people from all paths of life will have the opportunity to visit the UN offices, learn about their work, meet UN representatives and have their questions answered. Since 2014, the ground floor of the UN building is fully accessible to people with disabilities - which led the UN to be awarded the Green Mark of the Chisinau Accessible for All initiative. Works are currently ongoing to extend accessibility to other floors. More information on the event page.

Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22: UN Film Caravan and Debates

A UN Film Caravan, with movie projections and debates about UN themes, is organised in collaboration with SYSLAB centers in Balti, Cahul, Chisinau, Comrat and Rezina. More information about the movies to be projected and the topics of the debates will be available soon on the ONU Moldova Facebook page.
