Official Delegation of Sweden on Field Monitoring Visit

Chisinau, March 6, 2008 – A delegation of the Government of Sweden headed by the State Secretary for International Development Cooperation, Mr. Joakim Stymne, is paying a visit to Moldova during March 4-6. The key objective of the visit is to discuss ways of strengthening the cooperation with the Republic of Moldova and to learn more about the achievements of the projects funded by the Swedish Government in the Republic of Moldova.

Today members of the delegation paid a visit to the village of Taslic, Grigoriopol district, in the region of Transnistria, to monitor the distribution of livestock fodder in the framework of the UN project “Relief and Technical Assistance Response to the Drought in Moldova”. The officials met local public authorities and beneficiaries of the project as well as the NGO in charge for the distribution of fodder.

“I am pleased to have witnessed how this drought relief is reaching its intended beneficiaries”, Joakim Stymne said.  “The drought has created very difficultconditions for thousands of vulnerable families and I am glad that Sweden has been able to support the UN in its efforts to ease their plight.”

The UN project “Relief and Technical Assistance Response to the Drought in Moldova” was launched in September 2007 with a total available budget of approximately 8.5 million USD.

The financial support is provided by the European Commission through its Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), the Swedish Government through the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the Governments of the Netherlands, Norway, Italy and Finland, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The project is managed by the United Nations Development Programme in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN Population Fund, the United Nations Children Fund, other UN agencies and the Government of the Republic of Moldova as well as non-governmental organizations and local public authorities which are implementing partners of the project.
