United Nations Population Fund Provides Support to Pregnant Women and Nursing Mothers Affected by the Drought
Chisinau, October 18, 2007— Pregnant women and nursing mothers who live in regions extremely affected by the drought will receive food packages provided by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in the framework of the UN project „Relief and Technical Assistance Response to the Drought in Moldova”. The food packages with a total cost of $ 70,000 have been handed over today to the Ministry of Health.
Food packages which include sunflower oil, rice, sugar, flour, maize, dry yeast and beans, will be distributed to pregnant women and nursing mothers (with 6-month old children) through reproductive health centres from those 19 rayons most affected by this summer’s drought. The Ministry of Health with UNFPA’s support has developed an integrated plan for transparent distribution of these food packages to the vulnerable groups of people. President of the Republic of Moldova Visited the UN House
Chisinau, October 18, 2007— President of the Republic of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin visited today the United Nations House in Chisinau. The first such visit took place as part of the celebration of the 15th anniversary since the Republic of Moldova joined the United Nations and in recognition of the United Nations Day which is on October 24.
President Vladimir Voronin was welcomed by Kaarina Immonen, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova. The President met with Heads of UN Agencies and discussed development goals of Moldova. Special attention was given to the assistance provided by the UN to Moldova in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, in addressing the consequences of the severe drought which affected the country earlier this summer and to the public administration reform. The United Nations has Provided Support Worth $1.5 Million to Farm Households Affected by the Drought
Chisinau, 15 October 2007— Twenty thousand five hundred farm households from Moldova affected by this year’s drought received support from the United Nations in the framework of the project „Relief and Technical Assistance Response to the Drought in Moldova”. Starting with December, another fifteen thousand socially vulnerable families will be provided with livestock fodder. Donors visit Zaim, one of the villages receiving UN Technical Assistance to Alleviate the Consequences of the Drought in Moldova
Chisinau, October 11, 2007 –-Packages consisting of seeds, fertilizers and fuel were distributed today to farm households from the village of Zaim, Causeni district, who were affected by this year’s drought. World Investment Report 2007
Transnational Corporations, Extractive Industries and development

Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows amounted to $1,306 billion in 2006, rising more than 38% over the previous year and finishing close to the record level of 2000 (figure 1), UNCTAD´s yearly review of investment trends reports.
The World Investment Report 2007 finds that the growth of FDI in 2006 was the largest since 2000 and occurred in all three groups of economies: developed countries, developing countries, and the transition economies of South-East Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
